The London Borough of Kingston upon Thames is located Southeast of Heathrow airport a distance of 28 miles that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A3. It is located in southwest London and has a population of 160,400 according to 2011 statistics.
As a Royal borough and the largest of the four in England its royal connections stretch back to when it was once the Kings tun or Estate and in Anglo-Saxon times seven Kings were crowned there. In the Middle Ages it was an inland port with the River Thames being used to transport goods to and from London. It had a weekly market, fairs and the townsfolk prospered in farming, raising sheep for wool and fishing for salmon in the Thames. From the 16th Century Kingston Upon Thames benefited when Cardinal Wolsey built Hampton Court in 1520 which increased demand for the goods produced by local farmers and by this time other industries such as brewing, malting and leather tanning were also popular.
The borough is an interesting place to find attractions to do with heritage, nature, leisure and cultural activities. Some of the most popular include the Coronation Stone-situated outside The Guildhall which marks the place where Monarchs would once be crowned, Hampton Court Palace-the former home of King Henry VIII, Richmond Park-famous for Deer and scenic walks, the Rose Theatre and Chessington World of Adventures and leisure resort to the south of the borough.
